This test describes a general procedure for the detection of chlorine in soft plastic children's products. The test can be used to screen consumer products for the possibility of a material being made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC).
REAGENTS AND APPARATUS
Bunsen burner.
Copper wire (15 cm of a stripped heavy gauge wire) installed in a center of a cork stopper.
Detergent free scrubbing pad (stainless steel is preferred) to clean the copper wire as needed.
EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE
Heat one end of the copper wire in a Bunsen burner flame until all surface contaminants
have been burned off and that the wire becomes red hot.
Bring the red hot end of the copper wire against the product sample until a burn is produced on the surface of the material being tested, then bring the wire back into the upper part of the Bunsen burner flame.
Observe the flame for a change in colour. Once the organic compounds are burned, a distinctive green / blue-green colour indicates the presence of chlorine.
RESULTS
A positive result (green flame) indicates that the plastic material tested contains chlorine and is possibly polyvinyl chloride. Other than PVC, there are few plastic materials which contain chlorine that are commonly used in soft plastic children's products1.
A negative result (the flame does not turn green) indicates that the material tested cannot be PVC.

Some halogen free compounds such as pyridine and quinoline derivatives, purines, acid amides and cyano compounds decompose in the flame to produce cyanides which also give a blue-green flame. This test is therefore not entirely specific for halogens.
