Ferrocenecarboxylic acid (I), useful as a material for intercalators used in electrochem. DNA sensors, an electron mediator for phenol sensors, and a material for chiral ligands in manuf. of chiral cyclopropanecarboxylic acids, is prepd. in high yield by reacting ferrocene (II) with CO2 in the presence of anhyd. AlCl3, Mg, and optional Al in org. solvents. Thus, a mixt. of toluene, AlCl3, ad Mg was treated with II while introducing CO2 at 20-30℃ for 6 h to give 75% I.

The reaction of ferrocene with CO2 in the presence of AlCl3 proceeds smoothly under mild conditions (e.g., 1 atm, 50℃ to give ferrocenecarboxylic acid in 67-100% yields. Ferrocenecarboxylic acid formed via the complex (C5H5)2Fe（AlCl3)2CO2.
