The butylene oxide adduct of ethylenediamine is prepared by reacting butylene oxide with ethylenediamine, possibly in the presence of an alkaline catalyst. This catalyst may be potassium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide, sodium and potassium methylate and other catalyst well known to those skilled in the art. The quantity of butylene oxide employed is such that the molecular weight of the adduct may vary from about 200 to about 500. The butylene oxide content may range from about 0 percent to about 90 percent based on the total weight of the adduct.
