This work is intended as an on-line up to date Handbook with extensive covera
ge of all the major issues concerning the chemistry of carbohydrates, using the
term chemistry in a broad sense. The level of the book is aimed at advanced
students and research workers. The references cover a wide spectrum, some t
o major reviews and others given to illustrate the diversity of sources; Conferen
ce Proceedings constitute an important feature, it being assumed that internatio
nal meetings are representative of current trends. It is expected that future revi
ews of this nature will be based almost exclusively on on-line information retrie
val, and indeed the present work has recently made extensive use of SciFinder
Scholar.
In mid-2003, the Chemistry Department of the University of Cape Town approv
ed the placing of "Contemporary Carbohydrate Chemistry" on their server. Unde
r the direction of Professor Georges R Delpierre (GRD TRAINING CORPORATI
ON, P.O. Box 37838, Valyland, 7978, South Africa), whose guidance and assist
ance have been invaluable and deeply appreciated, this work has been complet
ed; he has likewise assisted in the present Revision (2006).
We are grateful for the invaluable help of the librarians of the University of Ca
pe Town, the financial input of the J Murray Hofmeyr Charitable Trust, and the
co-operation of Professor A L Rodgers (Head of the Department of Chemistry)
