Physical Data: mp 146 °C; bp 190 °C/720 mm Hg; d 1.32; vapor pressure: 2 mm Hg/70 °C.

Solubility: soluble in acetone, acetonitrile, ether, heptane, dioxane, chloroform, benzene, water, acetic acid, and ethanol; although it undergoes reactions with water, acetic acid, and ethanol above room temperature.

Form Supplied in: white crystalline solid (widely available).

Analysis of Reagent Purity: reagent purity can readily be detected by IR and 13C NMR.

Purification: can be recrystallized from CCl4, petroleum ether (bp 90–100 °C), or anhydrous benzene.6

Handling, Storage, and Precautions: solid and vapors are toxic, corrosive, and severely irritating to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. Strong odor. Severe lachrymator. May cause sensitization by inhalation and skin contact. Use in a fume hood and wear protective gloves, goggles, and clothing. Bottles should be refrigerated and kept tightly sealed to preclude contact with moisture. Reacts violently with warm water, strong oxidizing agents, strong acids, alcohols, DMF, amines, and DMSO. Hydrolysis is an auto-catalyzed self-accelerated reaction and is highly exothermic (insert book ref).

Cyanuric chloride (CC) has been known since 18277 and has a reaction profile very similar to other acid chlorides (see oxalyl chloride).8 Cyanuric chloride has long been known to react with warm alcohols to produce cyanuric acid and the corresponding alkyl halide, becoming violent if the alcohol is not anhydrous.9 However, it received little attention as a synthetic reagent for many years, until a formal technique for the synthesis of alkyl halides was published.1 The alcohol is heated to just below its boiling point and solid cyanuric chloride is added slowly over 1-1.5 h. Yields vary depending on the starting alcohol, though typically are around 50%. Yields with 2-pentanol were slightly higher than with thionyl chloride, and no regioisomerization was observed.
