The grinard reagent prepd. by adding cinnamyl chloride in 15mol. equiv. of ether to 6 at.equivs of 30-60 mesh Mg acted as though its structrue is Ph-CH(MgCL)CH:CH2. With CO2, PhCH:CH2CO2H was formed;
and with PhNCO,PhCH:CHCH2CONHPh was formed .Accompanying the formation of the Grignard reagent was the formation of bicinnamyl and liquid hydrocarbons. The structure of one of the hydrocarbons is PhCH:CHCH2CHPhCH:CH2, as established by analytical and synthetic process.

3-Bromopyridine and 3,5-dibromopyridine do not form Grignard reagent when cold . They form tars at higher temps. and during the reaction a color test for Grignard reagent with Michler's ketone is produced.
2-Iodopyridine reacts with Mg to form a green soln .and an insol .tar .
The soln. gives no color test with Michler's ketone ,but if the ketone is added immediately to the soln.and tar the color test is pos.o-IC6H4NMe2 and o-BrC6H4NMe2 gives high yields of Grignard reagents in the presence of I2 as a catalyst .
