Sterically hindered phenylalanine derivs. I (R1, R2 = H, C1-4 alkyl; racemic or enantiomeric), useful as uncoded amino acids in peptide analogs (no data), are prepd. by hydrogenolysis of tetrahydroisoquinolinecarboxylic acid derivs. II over Pd black catalysts in AcOH at 100-120°. Thus, hydrogenation of racemic II (R1 = R2 = H) over a 10-20 wt.% Pd sponge as described gave 90% (±)-I (R1 = R2 = H). Analogously, (±)-I (R1 = H, R2 = Me) was prepd. in 65% yield.
